The European Union is losing credibility because it is not pushing back against the US, former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said. He criticized the bloc’s passive stance on the Iran war and a trade deal with Washington, according to Politico. In comments to the outlet on Monday, Borrell accused EU leaders of weak and selective policies that let Washington act with impunity and damage Europe’s interests. Borrell, who has long criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza, has increasingly targeted the European Commission since leaving office. He said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has “continued to overstep her powers” in foreign policy, which the bloc’s founding treaties “clearly state” is not within her competence. He also accused her of being “systematically biased in favor of the US and Israel,” adding that Europe is “suffering from the consequences” in terms of high energy prices, while US President Donald Trump openly “gloats” that the situation benefits the US “because they are oil exporters.” Turning to the EU-US trade deal, Borrell said the bloc should not ratify the agreement struck by von der Leyen and Trump last summer. “The deal was unfair from the beginning,” he said. “They imposed 15% tariffs on us and we reduced ours on them.” Relations between Washington and Brussels have been strained since Trump returned to office last year, with recurring disputes over trade, defense, digital regulation, and the Ukraine conflict. The new US National Security Strategy criticizes the EU as strategically unreliable and warns of “civilizational erasure.” Borrell’s commentary comes amid a rift within the EU, as socialists in Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s party, a key part of von der Leyen’s European Parliament coalition, push back. Earlier this month, European Parliament critics said von der Leyen could face questioning from her own allies over her stance on the Middle East conflict, with some lawmakers asking whether she has abandoned the rules‑based international order. Senior lawmakers last week slammed her remark that “Europe can no longer be a custodian for the old-world order,” which was interpreted by some as an endorsement of Trump’s hardline approach. https://www.rt.com/news/635230-borrell-eu-losing-credibility/

EU capers....
The EU and NATO have their worst leadership in decades, marked by incompetence, a policy of appeasing the US, and failing to protect European interests, according to a scathing critique by journalist Claudi Perez in Spain’s leading newspaper, El Pais.
The opinion piece, published on Tuesday, lambasts European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, for their responses to the unprovoked US-Israeli war on Iran.
Perez, a political and economic correspondent, excoriates Rutte for his March 2 Fox News interview, deeming his praise of Trump as the “leader of the free world” an act of “boundless sycophancy.” His credibility was left “in tatters” after he voiced support for the US strikes, only for key NATO members, Germany, the UK, Italy, France, and Spain, to publicly rule out involvement.
Perez points out that von der Leyen’s “unbridled Atlanticism” and pro-Israel stance produced a “disastrous statement” that she was forced to reverse within 48 hours. On March 9, she declared Europe could no longer be a “custodian for the old-world order,” signaling to critics a break from international law. Two days later, she vowed an “unwavering commitment” to “always uphold” the UN Charter.
Perez dismisses Kallas as an inconsistent “lightweight”who shares the Brussels leadership’s “knack for stepping on giant banana peels.” According to Perez, she correctly ruled out a NATO role in the Strait of Hormuz, only to undermine herself by prematurely suggesting EU members might contribute to a mission to secure it. This incoherence, Perez argues, stems from her “obsession” with Russia, which colors all other agendas. On Tuesday, Kallas flatly rejected Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s call to normalize relations with Moscow and regain access to cheaper Russian energy.
The piece also takes a swipe at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who “botched” the matter by being “incapable” of defending Spain in the Oval Office after Trump berated Madrid for criticizing the US-Israeli actions in Iran. Spain was the first EU country to explicitly condemn the attack, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stating simply, “no to war.”

no help....
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that bombing Iran will not help bring about regime change, criticizing the US for lacking an exit strategy in the war.
Merz initially backed Washington after the US and Israel launched unprovoked attacks on Iran late last month, blaming Tehran’s leadership for the conflict and saying, “the sooner the mullah regime stops, the sooner this war will end.”
At a press conference on Monday, Merz called for regime change, but said it is not likely by military means.
“This Iranian regime... must be replaced by a democratically legitimate government. But bombing it into existence will in all likelihood fail.”
He also rejected German participation in the conflict, including efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route that has been blocked, sending prices up nearly 50% to over $100 a barrel.
“We lack the mandate from the UN, the EU, or NATO that is required under the law… We will not do it,”Merz said, adding that “this war is not a NATO matter.”
Merz went on to say that the region must not be allowed to slide into a “perpetual war,” citing risks to partners in the Middle East, and criticized Washington for having no plan to end the conflict. “To this day, we are not aware of any concept for how the operation can succeed… This war must be brought to an end as quickly as possible and with a clear plan and strategy.”
Analysts attribute Merz’s shift to growing EU and coalition pressure over the economic risks of a prolonged war – particularly for Germany’s energy-intensive sector, which is vulnerable to price spikes. Germany could also be among the countries most affected if the conflict triggers a new refugee crisis, given its sizable Iranian population.
Merz’s remarks came amid US President Donald Trump’s calls for nations that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz – specifically European NATO members – to send warships to secure free navigation. In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday, Trump said it is “only appropriate” for European NATO allies to help police their own energy supply lines, warning that they face a “very bad future” if they refuse.
However, European nations on Monday decided against extending the remit of their current Red Sea mission – established in 2024 to protect ships from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea – to the Strait of Hormuz.
“There was in our discussions a clear wish to strengthen this operation, but for the time being, there was no appetite in changing the mandate,” foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told reporters following an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
France, Japan, Australia, and Greece issued separate statements rejecting Trump’s call, saying they have no plans to send vessels to the Strait of Hormuz. The UK earlier said it is reviewing options but “will not be drawn into the wider war.”
