the anti-navi-pillay jewish brigade.....

Pillay is the world’s leading champion of the UN antisemitic hatefest known as the “Durban conference.” Here’s Pillay, Secretary-General of “Durban II” (the 2009 UN “Durban Review Conference”) in one of her attempts to enlist states to support Durban:

“[T]he Review Conference has also been the target of a disparaging media and lobbying campaign on the part of those who fear a repetition of anti-Semitic outbursts. This is unwarranted.”

She lied. Here’s Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who opened Durban II with Holocaust denial and grotesque antisemitism:

“Following the World War II they resorted to military aggressions to make an entire nation homeless on the pretext of Jewish sufferings…The word Zionism personifies racism that falsely resorts to religion and abuses religious sentiments to hide their hatred and ugly faces.”

GUS: WHAT A GREAT WOMAN....

Champion for international legal order

Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been at the forefront in the development of an international legal order. Ms Pillay was educated in the law and soon began defending activists who stood up against apartheid. She grew up in a family of Indian Tamil descent in Durban, South Africa, where in 1967 she founded her own law firm. In the 1980s she studied at Harvard University and earned her Doctor of Juridical Science degree there in 1988.

Dr. Pillay was appointed to the High Court of South Africa in 1995. Four years later she became a judge and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), where she gained distinction for her role in establishing that sexual violence and rape as well as the spreading of propaganda could lead to indictment for crimes against humanity and genocide. She was then named to serve as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC). From 2008 to 2014 she served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). Navi Pillay also chaired the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025, and in 2019 she became an ad hoc judge on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case in which Myanmar stands accused of genocide.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee attaches importance to Navi Pillay’s role as a driving force in the development of an international system of law and order, while further emphasising her judicial rigour, personal integrity and considerable courage. At a time when the number of wars and conflicts is rising, and when judges and institutions of international law are under political attack, the Nobel Committee wishes to issue a reminder that the ability to resolve conflicts without force or violence is dependent on the international rule of law. An international legal system in which war criminals are held to account and the victims of abuse see justice served is a precondition for a peaceful world.

unacceptable.....

Navi Pillay, the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, has called US sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) "unheard of" and "unacceptable".

The South African former ICC judge was awarded the prize on Friday "for her efforts to promote peace and international law", which paved the way for a "more comprehensive global legal order", the Nobel committee said.

US President Donald Trump expressed his disatisfaction with the pick and hours later the US unveiled sweeping sanctions in a significant acceleration of its attempt to "dismantle" what it described as a "rogue" institution.

The ICC said the measures were an assault on the rule of law and the foundations of the international legal order.

Pillay, speaking via video link during an event at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo on Saturday, said: "There is so much tension and anxiety over the continued existence of international courts, mainly the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

"Most importantly, sanctions have been announced by one country against the judges, just for the judicial orders they issue. This is unheard of, unacceptable."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio earlier said the sanctions - which include a ban on US entities making transactions with the ICC - were intended to "defend US sovereignty" and accused the court of seeking to prosecute Americans.

The US has already sanctioned 17 ICC judges and officials, but this move sanctions the court itself as an institution and is intended to inhibit its ability to operate financially.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Pillay praised, pilloried, ignored by Australia

by Professor Stuart Rees

Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay has received worldwide praise amid derision from Israel and the US. The Australian government remains silent. Stuart Rees reports.

The Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize committee awarded this year’s prize to Navi Pillay for her lifelong commitment to human rights, justice and accountability. Following a long and distinguished career as a human rights-focused jurist, South African-born Pillay was appointed chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory in 2021.

Quite predictably, within hours of the announcement, President Trump said he should have won eight Noble (sic) prizes, that the decision was an indelible stain on Norway and he would impose fresh sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) established to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Happy to do his master’s bidding, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US would punish the choice of Pillay by ‘dismantling the ICC brick by brick, … we will ban transactions with this rogue court, cutting off their resources and crippling its ability to operate.’

In lockstep with his US patron, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu declared the choice of Pillay ‘a gross weaponisation of the Nobel Peace Prize… If there was an award for lies, hatred and blood libel, Navi Pillay wouldn’t just be a contender, she’d be a front runner.’

Meanwhile, the Australian government has said nothing. Despite repeated claims to respect international law, a fearful silence is the best Anthony Albanese and Penny Wong can offer, a tactic suggesting a

cowardly sheltering behind the diatribes from Trump and Netanyahu.

A champion of human rights

In complete contrast to the Netanyahu criminality invective, Judge Pillay has promoted universal human rights, advocated respect for humanitarian law and, through her kindness and generosity, has represented the ideals of a common humanity.

Citations explaining Navi Pillay’s record explain why she is regarded as a champion of peace with justice and why so much is at stake in this controversy over her Nobel Prize.

The Nobel Committee explained their choice : ‘For her efforts to promote peace and international law.’ … ‘History has shown that a world operating without the rule of law is unjust, unwise, and inhumane.’

A year earlier, Navi Pillay received the Sydney Peace Prize whose citation included reference to ‘a lifetime of advocating for the fundamental human rights of women’, due recognition of Judge Pillay’s campaigns to abolish female genital mutilation and forced child marriages.

Where is the gratitude?

Navi’s lifetime work has included a period as a judge on the ICC, President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Chair of the UN Commission inquiring into war crimes in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Ever since her appointment as the first coloured, female judge to be appointed to the South African High Court, Navi Pillay has spoken and acted courageously.

Such a virtue has prompted ire from Israel and silence from Australia.

In her report to the UN, Judge Pillay concluded, ‘The State of Israel bears responsibility for the failure to prevent genocide, the commission of genocide and the failure to punish genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.’

Reference to Australian human rights abuses

Judge Pillay has also condemned Australia’s mandatory detention policy, repeatedly criticised offshore processing arrangements and the Northern Territory’s ‘imperialist, discriminatory attitude towards Indigenous communities.’

To tolerate criticism and still manage to act generously usually requires a touch of courage. In which case Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Wong still have a chance to congratulate Navi Pillay, if only because they regard themselves as champions of international humanitarian law.

Penny Wong’s silence is particularly notable, given her support for Venezuelan 2025 Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado, who handed her prize to Donald Trump.

An Australian government statement of support for the UN, for the Nobel Committee and for Navi Pillay’s humanity-saving achievements would still be invaluable.

But support for the Nobel choice of Navi Pillay cannot be expressed by silence.
