On Wednesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Will Cain Show,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said that China could easily open the Strait of Hormuz, but refuses to, and the U.S. will “have to decide whether, having achieved all of our objectives, it’s time to come home and let China and Russia and North Korea and Europe and all of the other countries that refuse to help” deal with the situation.

 

Kennedy began by saying, “I think that the people running Iran are reptiles, and they’re part of a colony of reptiles, China, North Korea, Russia, and — as I said — Iran. The chief reptile, the quarterback, is President Xi in China. You can’t trust any of them. All four of them are the same.”

He added, “The truth is, Will, in my judgment, we have accomplished all of our goals. We’ve also knocked out their air defenses. And our intelligence is so good that we will know, within minutes, if Iran starts its nuclear program again, and we can bomb it again. They have no nuclear weapons program. The only problem in all of this is the Strait of Hormuz. China could open it tomorrow if it told Iran to. China is choosing not to. And, at some point, the president’s going to have to decide whether, having achieved all of our objectives, it’s time to come home and let China and Russia and North Korea and Europe and all of the other countries that refuse to help take a crack at it because they’re going to pay the price of a closed strait even more than America.”

FBI director Kash Patel testified to the Senate Tuesday in a hearing that almost immediately descended into discussions about bestiality. Because that’s the world we live in now.

If you’re one of the fortunate souls who remains unfamiliar with Patel, let me fill you in: Trump’s FBI guy has, in the past, floated the idea that Jan. 6 was a Deep State setup, purged thousands of FBI workers after taking up the job, used polygraphs to test the loyalty of officials to the Trump administration, and overseen the detainment and deportation of thousands, the majority of whom have no criminal record. He believes that no media can be trusted, and is currently suing The Atlanticfor publishing a highly critical article about him.

Oh, and he removed the requirement for FBI recruits that they had never had sex with animals.

As with most people connected to this hall-of-mirrors version of an administration, Patel is a mixture of scary, sarcastic and bizarre. He opened today with the usual MAGA stuff about how he’s changed the FBI to “let cops be cops” and how he’s been busy “capturing literally the worst of the worst.” He listed off a few data points about child abusers and “gangbangers” who have been imprisoned under his watch. 

And then the questioning began.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said his meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov had illustrated deep divisions over the war in Ukraine.

Wadephul said the pair's meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly — the first since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 — was "intense" and that significant disagreements remain between the two sides.

"Of course, we did not agree on the key points," Wadephul told German public broadcaster ZDF.

He added that he had "offered to de-escalate, particularly with regard to the situation in Ukraine, but that has not yet found open ears."

Lavrov, for his part, said the meeting with Wadephul had been unnecessary. The Russian diplomat told German news agency dpa that he had "heard nothing different" from Berlin's public stance on the conflict.

"You could have just called me and said, 'Read my statement,'" Lavrov told the German foreign minister.

Wadephul: Russia's war in Ukraine 'shows contempt' for UN charter

Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia's war in Ukraine targets the lives of millions of innocent civilians, Ukraine and its culture, as well as the "European peace order."

"It puts vital grain deliveries for millions of people at risk, particularly in Africa, Asia and the Middle East," Wadephul said in his speech to the UN General Assembly, adding that Russia's actions "show contempt" for the UN charter and for the "common order on which we stand."

The minister also said Germany's support with Ukraine was consistent with UN values.

"Today Germany is the largest supporter of Ukraine and its defense against Russian aggression. This aggression has been condemned consistently by an overwhelming majority here in the General Assembly," Wadephul said.

He said Germany would continue to call on Russia to come to the negotiation table.

"I call on every member state to join us in convincing Russia that the future is built at the negotiation table, not on dead bodies in cities and villages," he added.

Prior to his speech, Wadephul met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UNGA, in the first of such meetings since 2022.

The talks come in the midst of tensions between Berlin and Moscow, after Germany accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack on Leipzig airport, with each country ordering the closure of the other's consulate.

"Wadephul called on the Russian Federation to abandon its dangerous path of escalation vis-a-vis Germany, Europe, and NATO," a German diplomat said of the talks in comments to AFP news agency. 

"He made it clear: incidents such as the recent attempted attack in Leipzig or further hybrid assaults would not shake Germany's resolve to support Ukraine, which has come under attack," the diplomat added.

"The German foreign minister condemned Russia's ongoing and increasingly targeted aggression against the Ukrainian civilian population. This attempt to increase pressure does nothing to change Russia's untenable situation: every month, tens of thousands of Russian soldiers die in a hopeless war of positions, while the Russian economy continues to collapse," the diplomat said.
