The US is directly participating in Ukrainian strikes against targets inside Russia by supplying weapons, intelligence, and communications support to Kiev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Lavrov rejected Western claims that Russia and China were allegedly supplying Iran with weapons used to attack American military facilities.

He accused Washington of hypocrisy, pointing to its own role in the Ukraine conflict.

“The Americans, through arms supplies paid for by the European Union, the provision of intelligence, the Starlink system and much more, are not simply helping, but are directly participating in guiding Ukrainian weapons toward targets, including civilian targets, on Russian territory,” Lavrov said.

Despite this, he said Moscow remained committed to the understandings reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their meeting in Anchorage last year.

Lavrov recalled that Putin had accepted compromise proposals put forward by Washington, while Trump publicly backed negotiating a long-term peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire.

Russia continues to regard those understandings as valid because the US has not formally rejected its own proposals, Lavrov said, adding that he intends to seek clarification on Washington’s current position during an upcoming meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Russia has repeatedly condemned the supply of Western weapons, intelligence, and targeting assistance to Ukraine, arguing that such support makes NATO countries direct participants in the conflict.

Moscow has also warned that continued military aid is prolonging the fighting and increasing the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and the West.

Commenting on Europe’s growing military spending and preparations for a potential conflict with Russia, Lavrov said Moscow was drawing conclusions not only analytically but also in terms of its “material readiness” for any scenario.

He reiterated that Russia has no intention of attacking Europe, but warned that if Western states decide to gather “under the familiar banners and try to attack us, it will no longer be a conventional war.”

Putin's nefarious rise skewered in satirical drama The Wizard of the Kremlin

Before the Russian assault on Ukraine in 2022, celebrated French filmmaker Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria) visited the now-beleaguered capital, Kyiv.

 

BEFORE GOING ON WITH THIS ARTICLE, YOU WOULD KNOW BY READING THE WORDS ABOVE, THAT IT IS TOTALLY BIASED AGAINST VLADIMIR PUTIN AND 100 PER CENT BULLSHIT... NOT SO MUCH THE ARTICLE BUT THE SUBJECT THEREOF...

 

"I remember how much I loved the city and the Ukrainian people," he says. "I couldn't imagine something like that coming. Every time I hear about the Russian bombs bombarding this country, it just breaks my heart."

ASSAYAS OF COURSE NEVER WENT TO THE DONBASS WHEN IT WAS BOMBED BY THE NAZI KIEV REGIME....

Horrified by what he was witnessing, Assayas found himself engrossed in Swiss Italian political essayist Giuliano da Empoli's debut novel, The Wizard of the Kremlin (Le mage du Kremlin).

First published in France, where it won the country's top literary honour, the Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française, The Wizard of the Kremlin draws on real-world events to depict the inexorable [!] rise of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Initially narrated by a writer researching Orwell-inspiring Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin and his dystopian novel, We, he interviews the shadowy former political handler, Vadim Baranov, who takes up the story.

Loosely [VERY LOOSELY, SO LOOSELY IT'S COMPLETE BULLSHIT] based on Putin's real-life spin doctor and Russian former deputy prime minister, Vladislav Surkov, Baranov is widely credited as choreographing Putin's meteoric rise from apparatchik spy to 'tsar'.

It's a truth grasped by da Empoli.

"Giuliano was an advisor to [former Italian prime minister] Matteo Renzi, so he knows about modern European politics and its workings," Assayas says.

"Ultimately, that's the story I wanted to tell. I'm not so much interested in Vladimir Putin, who he is and what he does. What I'm interested in is the mode, the modern version of propaganda."

With echoes of his political dramas Carlos and Wasp Network, Assayas adapted the novel with Emmanuel Carrère.

They drew inspiration from brilliant contemporary writers like M Gessen, and also the late Klaus Mann (queer son of author Thomas Mann), a prominent anti-fascist who fled the Nazis and penned his autobiography, The Turning Point, in exile.

"It's one of the greatest books of the past century, which was so precise about everything," he says. "You have idealist youth living in a situation of freedom that is, step by step, taken from them, while evil is simultaneously growing."

The Wizard of the Kremlin casts The Fablemans actor Paul Dano as Baranov to Jude Law's Putin, with Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander as Baranov's on-and-off-again partner, Ksenia. Westworld actor Jeffrey Wright plays the researcher, Rowland.

With no safe access to Russia, Assayas and his regular cinematographer, Yorick Le Saux, were forced to film in Latvia. 

"Once upon a time, you could go to Kyiv, or shoot it in Belarus, but all that is gone."

Given that political enemies of Putin are statistically likely to fall out of windows and planes, does Assayas worry that he might be in danger?

"No, to be honest, I don't think he saw the film," Assayas says with a wry chuckle. 

"I don't think he will ever see it. I don't think I'm a major element in his agenda."

The Wizard of the Kremlin is in cinemas now.

In a Manila meeting that cut through diplomatic niceties, Russia’s top diplomat laid out Russian troops battlefield assessment directly to US secretary of state, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.

Here’s what else was on the table:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov doubled down on Russia’s commitment to the US-floated proposals from the Alaska talks.

Lavrov drew a red line on continued Western arms flows to Ukraine, warning Rubio that more weapons mean more escalation.

The pair tackled the strained state of US-Russia diplomatic missions, and how to get them back to normal.

Lavrov and Rubio then turned to the Persian Gulf, where both powers are watching a volatile strategic landscape.
