WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The US Space Command (SPACECOM) and US allies expect to finalize a joint plan for future orbital warfare by the end of the year, SPACECOM Commander Gen. Stephen Whiting said.

"We are in the process now of building a defense of orbital assets CONOPS [an orbit Concept of Operations] together," Whiting said on Tuesday at the Mitchell Institute in Washington, as quoted by Breaking Defense.

He expects to have it finished by the end of this year.

According to the general, the US and its allies must determine how to combine their space capabilities, avoid duplicating efforts, and subsequently integrate and synchronize them.

This initiative falls under the framework of the multinational operation "Olympic Defender," which combines military space operations by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

Whiting declined to share exactly which assets would be included in the future plan. The commander noted that the allies would build upon exercises conducted over the past year and a half, during which participating nations practiced rendezvous and proximity operations and the surveillance of objects in orbit.

Military analysts warn that the Sarmat—capable of carrying Avangard hypersonic glide vehicles—possesses enough destructive energy to vaporize major metropolitan centers, with former U.S. officials noting the thermal output could physically melt steel structures like the Eiffel Tower. The Kremlin confirmed the Sarmat will enter full combat duty by the end of 2026, marking a significant escalation in Russia’s strategic deterrence amid deteriorating relations with Washington.

The Space Surveillance Telescope (SST) is a Southern Hemisphere-based United States Space Force telescope used for detecting, tracking, and cataloguing satellites, near-Earth objects, and space debris.[1]

In 2011, SST achieved first light at the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, United States. In 2017, the SST was dismantled and moved to the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station, Exmouth, Western Australia[2][3] to a site with an altitude of around 65 metres (213 ft). From there it began observing the Southern Celestial Hemisphere and collecting data for the US Space Surveillance Network. The repositioned SST achieved first light in Australia on 5 March 2020.[4] The SST entered initial operational capability on 4 October 2022 [5] and was originally operated by the Royal Australian Air Force's, 1 Remote Sensor Unit under the command and control (C2)of the U.S. Space Force.[3][6][7][8] No. 1 Space Surveillance Unit assumed responsibility for operating the SST in early 2023.[9]
