states to take-over defence .....
Defence to spend $8m on Eden-Monaro roads The Federal Government has announced $8 million worth of funding for road upgrades in the marginal seat of Eden-Monaro and is challenging state and territory governments to chip in. The money will come from the Department of Defence which is building its new headquarters near the town of Bungendore. Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says it is unusual for Defence to fund road upgrades but it is part of preparing the area for the new command centre. "I think Defence has a moral responsibility to cover its portion of the traffic impact," he said. Sitting member for Eden-Monaro Gary Nairn says the Kings Highway also needs $6.5 million in upgrades from the New South Wales and ACT Governments. "Let's see the NSW Government and the ACT Government wear responsibility for the road that has always been their responsibility," he said. Mr Nairn says the Federal money will not be dependent on state or territory contributions.
